Regular Nappy Dishes

Fostoria Glass made a large variety of Nappy dishes in the American pattern.  They made flared, deep, shallow, handled, and regular nappies; hence, they offered a wide assortment to choose from.  In this post, our focus is just on the documented  “Regular Nappy” dishes produced in clear crystal.  There are a total of five different pieces, ranging from 4½” to 8″ in diameter.

The regular nappies were some of the most popular pieces in the 2056 line, and each of them enjoyed a very long life.  In fact, all of them were born in 1915 and endured until the 1980’s.  The two that lived the longest were the 5″ and the 8″ Regular Nappies – being produced from 1915-1985.  That is a remarkable run, much longer than most of the other 2056 treasures.  The bowls are versatile, even today, which makes them a popular choice in any American collection.

The reason these pieces are classified as “regular” nappies is because they don’t possess any other special design traits – such as being flared, having a handle, or the bowl being shallow or deep in depth or height.  They are just regular bowls, without any bells or whistles.  The smallest regular nappy has a height of about 1¾ inches, with the biggest regular nappy having a height of approximately 3⅝ inches.

Handled Nappy – Regular

Item Number:  499
Diameter:  4½”
Production Dates:  1915-1982

Fostoria Glass made a large variety of Nappy dishes in their American pattern.  This is considered a “regular” Nappy (with a simple round shape).  It showcases a beautiful handle and has a height of approximately 2 inches.  The Regular Handled Nappy was one of the pioneering pieces in the American 2056 line, and it enjoyed a long and happy life.

Nappies are often defined as little bowls; however, Fostoria Glass produced both small and large nappy dishes.  In the early years, most of their bowls (even the large 10″ size) was described as a “Nappy”.  The American lineup of nappies includes those with or without handles, squared, flared, and there’s even a three-cornered design.  With so many options available, finding one to suit your needs should prove to be quite easy.

Regular Nappy – 4½”

Item Number:  495
Diameter:  4½”
Production Dates:  1915-1982

Fostoria Glass made a large variety of Nappy dishes in their American pattern.  Of all the regular Nappies, this 4½” Nappy is the smallest.  It is also one of the select few that was lucky enough to be in production from the time the line debuted in 1915 until the glass factory closed.  Therefore, it has a long and proud life.

Fostoria American Green Nappy - 4½"This particular Nappy is about 1¾” in height, 4½” in diameter, is round in shape, and is without a handle.  It is the “regular” Nappy.  This regular Nappy is special; however, as it was also offered in a beautiful green color.  While it was mainly produced in clear crystal, there was a brief period of time in 1925-1926 when it was available in green as well.  Every now and again you will see this 4½” Nappy in another Fostoria color, other than green.  These harder-to-find colors are either samples, whimsies, or one-of-a-kinds.  The only Nappy color that was officially produced by Fostoria in a regular production run (though limited) is the green color shown on the right.

After the Fostoria Glass Factory closed in the 1980’s, Dalzell Viking produced pieces in a Blue Gray and Cranberry Mist color.  These items are hard to find too, and in my opinion, lack the luster and silky finish that the original Fostoria Nappies had.  The Dalzell Viking pieces were produced sometime between 1986 and 1998.

Nappies are considered little bowls, and you can use them for a multitude of purposes.  Luckily for us, Fostoria Glass made a wide assortment of them in the American pattern!  As an eBay Partner, I may be compensated if you make a purchase on eBay.  The following link shows available 4½” Nappies on eBay.

Handled Nappy, Flared

Item Number:  HN-05
Size:  5½″
Production Dates:  1915-1944

Fostoria Glass made quite a few different nappy dishes in their 2056 line.  Several were among the very first American items to be showcased in 1915.  The Handled Nappy (Flared) was one of those pioneering pieces.  By definition, a “nappy” is simply a shallow open serving dish (or small bowl), with no rim.  You can find them with a handle, with two handles, or even without a handle.  Therefore, there are many styles of nappy dishes.  The American pattern produced regular, flared, handled, and even 3-cornered nappy bowls.

One good thing about the handled nappy dishes is that they were unique in design.  Any time a piece of glass is made with a handle, the production process is a bit more complicated.  Therefore, you will not have to worry about any Look-Alikes (i.e. Whitehall, Jeannette Glass, etc.) when it comes to the American handled nappy dishes.

Of the four different handled nappies that were produced in the American pattern, it is the flared Handled Nappy that is the most elusive.  The other nappy dishes were produced almost twice as long as the flared version.  As an eBay Partner, I may be compensated if you make a purchase on eBay.  The following link shows available Handled Flared Nappies on eBay.

Regular Nappy and Cover

Item Number:  505
Height:  5”
Production Dates:  1924-1982

Fostoria | American | Nappy and CoverThe Fostoria Nappy and Cover was a very popular piece in the American line. So popular, in fact, that it has a Look-Alike cousin in the American Whitehall pattern.  Many times people confuse the two, and it is not uncommon to see the American Whitehall piece being sold as genuine Fostoria American. The American Whitehall piece is called a “Candy Box/Cover”.

The Nappy and Cover is approximately 5″ in height. The Nappy Cover (or Lid) is approximately 3” high and has an inside retainer ring of clear glass.  While Fostoria Glass officially called this piece a “Nappy”, it is also referred by many as a candy dish.

If you find a similar dish in color, then it is probably the Whitehall version. The American Whitehall Candy Box was manufactured in a variety of colors – such as Blue, Ruby, Green, Blue Carnival, and more.  It was also produced in clear crystal.

The Nappy and Cover was produced for many years and is still fairly easy to find in the aftermarket.  As an eBay Partner, I may be compensated if you make a purchase on eBay.  The following link shows available Nappy and Covers on eBay.
