The small and petite 3-Toed Tricorne is an item we don’t really hear (or see) a lot about. Why is that? It seems to always be overshadowed by its bigger sibling, the 3-Cornered Centerpiece. Thus, I think it is important to focus the spotlight on the 3-Toed Tricorne. It is way overdue.
I think the first thing I should mention is its official name and description. Rarely do people call it by its proper name. Even some book authors don’t call it by its proper name, which has only led to more confusion. It was never described as a centerpiece by Fostoria Glass, for it is too small in size. Fostoria described this piece as a “tricorne”, which honestly, is a most perfect description. It means “having three horns or hornlike projections; three-cornered”. So let’s be clear; this item is not a centerpiece – it’s a tricorne.
The 3-Toed Tricorne is an intriguing item, because frankly – most people don’t know what to use it for. In the beginning, when it was first introduced, Fostoria Glass categorized it as a miscellaneous item. As time went by, it was then included in their Nappy category – as this resource website has done. It would seem that even Fostoria was conflicted as to how to categorize this item, and I think that is the case for many collectors today. Truthfully, you can use it for whatever you wish!
Another topic worth mentioning is the true production dates for the 3-Toed Tricorne. Unfortunately, it seems that most published production dates for this item are severely flawed. The error is not reflective of a few years; rather, the data is incorrect by decades! Look at the production dates posted above, for this piece really did not have a long life. For that reason alone, the 3-Toed Tricorne might be worthy of another look.

Approximate Size: 8″ D – 1¾” H
Production Dates: 1916-1925
The Shallow Nappies look slightly different from all the other nappy dishes in the American pattern, simply because they are shallow – and without great depth. I personally like the appearance of these pieces, for they have a beautifully crafted bottom and look very elegant. These are vintage pieces, and those that survived could be over 100 years-old. In addition to the 8″ size, Fostoria Glass also produced a smaller 7″ Shallow Nappy.

The Shallow Nappies look slightly different from all the other nappy dishes in the American pattern, simply because they are shallow – and without great depth. I think Fostoria Glass must have thought so, too, because they did not picture the Shallow Nappy with the other nappy dishes when they debuted and cataloged the pattern in 1915. It was pictured and grouped with the Fruit Bowl (aka Tom & Jerry), the Comport, and the Sandwich Plates. Fruit (stewed, fresh, canned, or preserved) was very much in favor in 1915. Many people enjoyed their fruit served in similar shallow dishes, and it just seems logical that Fostoria Glass would have featured an appropriate serving dish to go with their Fruit Bowl.

Item Number: 501
Approximate Size: 5″ D – 2¼” H
Production Dates: 1915-1982
Fostoria Glass made a large variety of Nappy dishes in their American pattern. This particular handled nappy has a unique shape of three corners. Like many of the American Nappies, it made its debut in 1915 – and enjoyed a very long and happy life.
Nappies are often defined as little bowls; however, Fostoria Glass produced both small and large nappy dishes. In the early years, most of their bowls (even the large 10″ size) was described as a “Nappy”. The American lineup of nappies includes those with or without handles, squared, flared, and even this three-cornered design. With so many options available, finding one to suit your needs should prove to be quite easy.

Item Number: 211-DN
Diameter: 10″
Production Dates: 1933 to mid-1979
Out of all the nappy dishes that Fostoria produced in the American pattern, I believe the “deep” nappies are some of the most beautiful. They make a large and bold statement on the dining table. This particular nappy stands about 4⅜” tall and has an opening diameter of approximately 10-inches. There were only a few deep nappies made in the American pattern. Any collector would be more than pleased to have one, or several, in their collection.
In the 1940’s, Fostoria Glass started to refer to this piece as a Salad Bowl. That being said, the production dates that I have given are in reference to when Fostoria Glass listed this specific item as a “Deep Nappy”. For many years this item was listed in catalogs and price lists under two different names (a Deep Nappy and a Salad Bowl), with the same exact item number. The original 10″ Deep Nappy did not have a foot. I have added “DN” (Deep Nappy) to this piece’s item number to make it easier for proper identification and research purposes.
