Production Dates: 1916-1958
The Fostoria Glass Company produced two Ice Tub Plates in the American line. The one that we will be addressing in this post is the larger of the two, which was first produced in 1916. The Small Ice Tub Plate debuted first, and is about one-inch smaller in diameter. Often, you will see the Ice Tubs sold without the Plate, and this could be for a variety of reasons. Over the years, people might have thought the Ice Tub Plate was just another ordinary plate and separated it from the Ice Tub – or the Ice Tub was originally bought separately (without the Plate).
The Large Ice Tub Plate and Dinner Plate came from the same mold, so it is easy to understand the confusion in identifying them. Since the Ice Tub Plate may have edges that flow slightly upward, this trait will usually reduce its overall diameter by about ½” from the regular Dinner Plate. The higher the edges, the smaller in diameter the plate will be.

Please note that your search might offer very little results, as over the years, many Ice Tub Plates have been separated from their Ice Tubs. However, keep searching … because every now and again, you will see the correct duo listed.

This item was only produced for a few years and is considered to be a rare item. It was also known as the “Hotel Ice Tub”. Of all the ice-holding vessels in the American pattern, the Hotel Cracked Ice is the largest. It has a holding capacity of approximately 10½ pints. This item was not inexpensive when it debuted, costing almost three times as much as the Large Ice Tub. I would imagine that the hotel trade, the fortunate … or the wealthy, were among the initial owners of such a grand piece.

This is the second Ice Tub produced in the American 2056 line. A separate Ice Tub Plate was also available for purchase, often paired with the Ice Tub. They were not sold as a set, even though they were often used and shown together. Each piece was sold separately.

The American pattern produced two Ice Tubs of different sizes. The larger one is featured on the right, and the smaller Ice Tub (with a 5⅝” diameter) is featured on the left.

Of all the ice tubs or buckets that were produced in the American pattern, this is the only one that came with a metal handle. The handle can be removed for easy cleaning. Fostoria Glass also sold metal tongs that matched the style of the handle, and these pieces were often paired together. The Ice Tongs; however, were sold separately – Item 971.
This particular ice bucket was not in production as long as the more commonly seen ice tubs. As an eBay Partner, I may be compensated if you make a purchase on eBay. The following link shows available Ice Buckets on eBay.

The Fostoria Glass Company produced three different types of Liners that could be used with the 2056 Ice Dish – the Fruit Cocktail Liner, the Crab Meat Liner, and the Tomato Juice Liner. These inserts (unlike the actual Ice Dish) are “blown” glassware; therefore, they are lighter, thinner, and more fragile than the pressed American pieces.
The Crab Meat Liner (pictured in the center) has a holding capacity of approximately 4 ounces. It is about 2¾” in height and has the smallest holding capacity of all three liners. The Tomato Juice Liner is the tallest and the Fruit Cocktail Liner is the shortest – each with a 5 oz. holding capacity.
