The Sugar and Cover originally debuted in 1915. Decades later, Fostoria modified the name to “Sugar and Cover” and/or a “Candy Jar and Cover”. Many folks refer to this piece as a “Barrel Sugar” – simply because of its appearance. Whatever name you prefer, this beautiful piece will serve sugar, candy, and an assortment of other food items – in grand style.
Of all the sugar servers produced in Fostoria’s American pattern, this Sugar and Cover is the tallest. It is about 6¼” tall, measured with the Cover on. My own personal piece measures 6½” in height. Slight size variations are to be expected, especially when you consider that all the American items were finished by hand.
In my scrapbook of Fostoria memories and treasures, the Sugar and Cover is one of my most favorite American pieces. I like the fact that it is versatile in purpose – being able to use it for serving both sugar and/or candy. It is not seen as much as the other sugar servers in the American pattern, so there is a bit of mystery behind it.
In the original 1915 Fostoria American Catalog Supplement, it was this Sugar and Cover that was predominately featured next to the Cream Pitcher. Fostoria also produced (circa 1915) a smaller Individual Sugar, without a lid. The Handled Sugar and Cover came into production later.

This is the round Fostoria American Butter and Cover. The Fostoria Glass Company officially made two types of butter dishes, the one you see here … and the Oblong Butter and Cover. The Round Butter and Cover was introduced in Fostoria’s 1915 original debut of the American pattern, whereas the Oblong Butter and Cover did not make an appearance until many years later.
In most scenarios, due to it’s age and beauty, the round Butter and Cover is usually the more sought after and valuable variation of the two butter dishes. The approximate height of the Butter Dish and Cover is 5¾”, and the approximate diameter of the Butter Dish (Plate) is 7¼”.
Fostoria’s butter dishes are really quite impressive. They are substantial pieces of glass, with great clarity and weight. The Butter and Cover lived a long and beautiful life. It was produced from 1915 – 1974, making it the longest production-run butter dish in the American line. People adored it, and still do.
While I still use mine for it’s original purpose, I also use it in other unconventional ways. They make beautiful mini-cake domes and are perfect for storing and serving cupcakes in grand style. There really is no limit as to how you can use these beautiful treasures.

The Oblong Butter and Cover has an approximate height of 2⅛”, a length of 7½” and a width of 3¼”. All pieces can vary slightly in size, as each piece was handmade. It was one of the few pieces in the American line that was still being produced in 1983. The butter dish comes in two pieces, with a bottom and a cover (or lid.) It is important to note that Fostoria did produce another butter server in their American line – the Round Butter and Cover.
The Oblong Butter can be used in a variety of ways, other than for just serving butter. If the lid is inverted (turned upside down) it can become a beautiful storage or flower box. In fact, Fostoria Glass Company officially called the lid a “Flower Box”, and it was featured in their catalogs as such. The inverted lid also acts as a beautiful table piece to serve individual sugar or tea packets, allowing guests to retrieve them in an orderly fashion.
