Mayonnaise, Plate, & Ladle

Item Number:  477
Approximate Size:  3¾” H
Production Dates:  1934-1973

The American 2056 pattern offered different types of mayonnaise dishes.  Consumers had a choice of buying most of the mayonnaise components by themselves – such as the bowl and the Mayonnaise Plate.  With this particular item; however, the Mayonnaise, Plate & glass Ladle were sold as one unit.  Item number 477 purchased all three pieces together.

Regarding the size of this item, which literally is three different pieces, is nearly impossible to be exact.  The reason is that Fostoria Glass themselves first put the height measurement at 3″, then years later amended the measurement to be 3¾” (which is the size I am using).  Since three different pieces were used to make up this one set, and each piece was finished by hand, you would be wise to expect size variations.  The plate adds height, which I include in my 3¾” measurement.

Of the different mayonnaise dishes offered, I consider this 3-piece set to be the fanciest of them all.  As an eBay Partner, I may be compensated if you make a purchase on eBay.  The following link shows available Mayonnaise dishes on eBay.

Catsup Bottle & Stopper

Item Number:  BOT-2
Approximate Size:  6¾″ H – 8½ oz.
Production Dates:  1939-1943 Catsup; 1957-1958 Condiment

Ketchup and catsup are simply two different spellings for the same condiment.  Since the Fostoria Glass Company used “Catsup” to describe this particular piece, I want to remain true to this item’s history and have described it with their original spelling.

Put simply, the Catsup Bottle & Stopper is quite beautiful.  I don’t think I have ever seen another condiment bottle that is prettier.  The Stopper is equally as nice, being both solid and hefty.  When I want to feel a bit special, I will bring this piece out and serve homemade catsup in it.  It looks gorgeous on the table; however, I will tell you … the catsup does not flow out of it as beautifully as it looks.  If you were serving thin catsup, you probably would not have a problem, but thick catsup is difficult to “pour”.  I found through personal experience that guests wanted to thrust the bottle up and down, or heaven forbid – put a knife in it to get the catsup out.  That simply would not do, so now I only use it when serving thinner condiment sauces.

Oil & D Stopper – 7 oz.

Item Number:  531
Approximate Size:  7″ H – 7 oz.
Production Dates:  1915-1970

Fostoria Glass made two Oil & Stoppers in the American pattern.  The piece featured in this post is the largest size made.  It holds approximately 1-2 more ounces than the smaller version.  The height measurement is referring to the total height of the piece, with the D Stopper in place.

Fostoria sometimes used abbreviations in their product descriptions; thus, the “D” Stopper simply refers to a “Drop Stopper”.  These type of stoppers allow for a repeated, consistent, and accurate dispensing of oil – one drop at a time, or in a stream.  The stoppers were available with clear glass, or with a “frosted” look.  The frosted stoppers are officially described as “Ground Stoppers”.  A buyer had a choice between the two, and the ground variety was more expensive.

One of the sets that the American pattern offered was a 6-Piece Condiment Set.  The set included two 5 oz. Oils, two Shakers (FGT), one Mustard/Cover & Spoon, and one 9″ Condiment Tray.  The 6-Piece Condiment Set; however, was never sold with the larger 7 oz. oil cruets.  Some books state that these larger pieces won’t fit on the Condiment Tray.  I believe that “most” of them won’t fit, but I do know that some will.  The piece featured in this post does fit the indented wells on the Condiment Tray, and I use it as such.  In summary, the larger Oils were not sold in the official 6-Pc Condiment Set, but it is possible to find some that will fit the 9″ Condiment Tray.

Oil & D Stopper – 5 oz.

Item Number:  528
Approximate Size:  6½” H – 5 oz.
Production Dates:  1915-1981

Fostoria American Oil & Ground StopperFostoria Glass made two Oil & Stoppers in the American pattern.  The piece featured in this post is the smaller of the two.  Originally, when this item debuted in 1915, it was listed as having a 6 oz. holding capacity.  A few years later the catalogs and price lists reflected a 5 oz. holding capacity, and so it remained throughout its many years of production.  The height measurement is referring to the total height of the piece, with the D Stopper in place.

The 6-Piece Condiment Sets included two Oils, two Shakers (FGT), one Mustard/Cover & Spoon, and one 9″ Condiment Tray.  The 6-Piece Condiment Set was never sold with the larger oil cruets.

Mustard, Cover, & Spoon

Item Number:  487
Height:  3¾”
Production Dates:  1934-1965

I seem to like quite a few of the condiment-style dishes in the American line, and the Mustard piece is no exception.  If intact and original, the Mustard piece will include a total of three items – the Mustard dish, a Cover, and a Spoon.  The authentic Fostoria Spoon is glass, not metal.  The Mustard has an approximate height of 3¾” (from the bottom to the top of the Cover).

Fostoria | American | Mustard | 3 PiecesThe Mustard dish is an item that you can still find today.  It was produced for about thirty years.  That being said, what is more difficult is finding the three pieces (Mustard, Cover, and Spoon) all together.  Many times you will find the Mustard and Cover, or just the Mustard by itself.  You might also find the Mustard and Cover and a replacement spoon (not original to the piece), made out of metal or silver.

Here is a picture of all three original elements – the Mustard, the Cover, and the Spoon. Notice that the Cover has a notch in it, just big enough for the glass Spoon to sit in the Mustard dish comfortably.
