Footed Mayonnaise

Item Number:  476
Approximate Size:  4⅝” H
Production Dates:  1948-1973

The American 2056 pattern offered different types of mayonnaise dishes – bowls2-part dishes, and footed varieties.  Consumers had a choice of buying most of the mayonnaise components separately, and not in complete sets.  While this post is about the Footed Mayonnaise, please know that Fostoria Glass also offered a Footed Mayonnaise & Ladle, which is Item 475.

The Footed Mayonnaise had the shortest production life of all the American mayonnaise dishes.  This is one of the reasons why this item does not appear as plentiful in the current aftermarket.  This item was also the last variation of a mayonnaise dish that the American pattern offered.  These factors play a role in the current pricing of the item, especially when compared to one of the more familiar mayonnaise dishes.

Production Dates:  1939-1974

The American 2056 pattern offered different types of mayonnaise dishes.  Consumers had a choice of buying bowls, plates, a Footed Mayonnaise, and even this 2-Part Mayonnaise.  A 2-Part Mayonnaise (with 2 Ladles) – Item 480 – was another purchasing option.

2-Part Mayonnaise & 2 Ladles

Item Number:  480
Approximate Size:  6¼” D – 2¾” H
Production Dates:  1939-1974

The American 2056 pattern offered different types of mayonnaise dishes.  Consumers had a choice of buying bowls, plates, a Footed Mayonnaise, and even this 2-Part Mayonnaise – complete with two glass ladles.  The 2-Part Mayonnaise was also available without the ladles.

Regarding the size of this item, I am listing the height as being approximately 2¾”.  There are Fostoria catalogs that list the height as 3¾”; however, I can’t get close to that assessment when measuring any of my pieces.  If I measure the bowl’s height with the ladles resting inside the dish, I can get that taller measurement.  I am not sure if that is how Fostoria calculated its size, or if this was a clerical error.  For a true height measurement of the bowl itself, realize that it is closer to the 2¾” measurement.

Mayonnaise

Item Number:  478
Approximate Size:  5¼” D – 3⅜” H
Production Dates:  1934-1973

The American 2056 pattern offered different types of mayonnaise dishes.  Consumers had a choice of buying most of the mayonnaise components by themselves – such as just this dish, or the Mayonnaise Plate.  A more complete mayonnaise set (Item 477) can be found – which includes the Mayonnaise, Plate & Ladle.

It is also worth noting that I have seen slight size and shape variations on this item.  The main difference has been seen in the flaring of the top edges.  Since they were finished by hand, the final shape was determined by the craftsman.  When more flaring is applied, the item will have a bigger diameter and probably be slightly smaller.
