Small Boat

Item Number:  128
Approximate Size:  8½” L
Production Dates:  1915-1985

Fostoria American Small Green BoatThe Small Boat is one of the longest-running production items in the entire American line.  Two different-sized boats were produced, this smaller one – and a bigger 12″ size.  The overall length measurement of this piece is 8½”, including the handles.  Boats, as opposed to the American “relish” dishes, are open in design.  They have no dividers or compartments within the dish.

While the Small Boat was primarily made in clear crystal, there was a very brief period of time from 1925-1926 when this piece was produced in a beautiful shade of green.  This was an option for both the small and large-sized boats.  The green-colored boats are not common items, as they were only made for about one year.  Every now and again you might find a boat in another color; however, those would be very hard to find – a whimsey or an item produced in an experimental or trial color.

2-Part Relish

Item Number:  620
Approximate Size:  12″ L; 5½″ W
Production Dates:  1935-1985

Fostoria Glass produced several relish dishes in their American pattern.  These dishes often had sections within them – from two parts to four parts.  The 2-Part Relish was produced for fifty years, more than any other relish dish in the 2056 line.  It showcases two beautiful handles, one on each side of the dish.  The length measurement stated above is for the overall length, including the handles.

Olive

Item Number:  536
Approximate Size:  6″ L – 1⅜” H – 3½” W
Production Dates:  1915-1982

The Olive dish is another pioneering piece in the American 2056 pattern.  It had one of the longest production runs in the entire line, making its debut in 1915.  There were two other similar shaped pieces produced at the same time – the Pickle and the Celery dish.  Of all three, the Olive dish is the smallest.  These three pieces are wonderful appetizer and buffet servers, and can even be used for other purposes as well.

4-Division Relish

Item Number:  624
Length:  9″
Production Dates:  1939-1970

The 4-Division Relish is technically classified as a relish and/or buffet dish.  It is a beautiful serving piece, with four divided compartments.  Serrated edges encase the complete top rim of the piece.  While it might look dainty and feminine in appearance, it is quite substantial for its size – with a weight of approximately two pounds.

The 4-Division Relish was produced from approximately 1939 through 1970.  It is about 9″ in length and 6½″ in width – measured from one outer edge to the other.  A variety of food items are easily served from this beautiful dish – from celery sticks to an assortment of veggies, olives, crackers and more!

There are not many pieces in the American line that display this particular type of edging.  You can find it on the small Square Ash Tray and in the handle design of a few of the American trays.  The most common type of damage found with this piece is to the protruding edge, so proper care should be taken when storing.

4-Part Square Relish

Item Number:  RB-01
Approximate Size:  10″ to 11″ Square
Production Dates:  1934-1943

The Fostoria Glass Company classified this piece as a relish and/or buffet dish.  With four separate compartments, it can easily hold relish, food, and a variety of other items.  The lipped edge makes it easy to transport from one room to the other.

Fostoria | American | 4-Part Square RelishThe 4-Part Square Relish was only made for about nine years, from 1934-1943.  When it was first introduced in 1934, catalogs stated it as being 11″ square.  A year or two later, Fostoria changed their description to reflect it as being 10″ square.  When I took the tape measure to my own pieces, the 4-Part Square Relish is exactly 11″ square, measured from the outermost edge of one rim to the other.

This particular buffet dish is very similar to the 10″ Square Tray.  The 4-Part Square Relish has a substantial rim of clear glass all the way around it.  The four partitioned components help keep everything separate and organized.

Years ago, most relish trays were for finger foods.  They not only offered something simple and delicious to eat, but were also attractive to look at.  Arranging the food in a pleasing and attractive fashion was almost as important as the food itself.

Green Boat – Large

All you have to do is take a look at the shape of this piece, and you will instantly understand the origin of its name.  Simply put, it looks like a boat. The green pieces of Fostoria American are rare, and they were only produced for a couple of years in the mid-1920’s.  The Boats were primarily made in clear crystal and came in two sizes – Small and Large. Fostoria did make Boats in other colors as well – such as Amber, Black Milk Glass, etc. The colored Boats are harder to find because of their limited years in production, and with that, comes a much higher price tag.

The Green Boat pictured in this post is the larger size – measuring in at approximately 12″ in length –  from handle to handle.  While Fostoria Glass Company officially called this piece a “Boat”, many folks also refer to it as a Relish Boat or Relish Dish.  As you can tell from the picture, the hue and clarity of the Green Boat is quite spectacular.  These pieces can add some vibrancy and/or holiday color to your table during special occasions.

Fostoria | American | Green BoatBecause of the limited production of the colored pieces, finding them in the aftermarket will be more difficult.  Every now and again you will find one pop up on eBay, and if are lucky enough to find one, I would recommend trying to bid on it.  When searching for this particular piece, you might want to include some additional search terms – such as “green relish dish”, “green boat”, or “fostoria american green”, etc.  As I mentioned earlier, quite a few people refer (and know) this piece as a relish dish – and not as a “Boat”.
