3-Part Relish

Item Number:  RB-03
Approximate Size:  9½″ L – 6″ W
Production Dates:  1935-1944

The American relish dishes are some of the most beautiful and useful serving pieces in the entire 2056 line.  Fostoria Glass produced several different types of them, and a consumer could choose from 2-part, 3-part, and even 4-part relish servers.  When it comes to the 3-part relish dishes, two different types were offered.  This post is about the 3-Part Relish, and the easiest way to distinguish it from the 3-Part Combination Relish is to look at its design.  The combination dish will have a long glass divider that is in the center of the dish, with two smaller compartments making up the other half of the server.  The regular 3-Part Relish is a smaller dish, designed with three evenly-spaced dividers.

Pickle

Item Number:  540
Approximate Size:  8″ L – 1½” H – 4″ W
Production Dates:  1915-1982

The Pickle dish is another pioneering item in the American 2056 pattern.  There were two other similar shaped pieces that were introduced at the same time – the larger Celery and the smaller Olive dish.  The sizes of the three oblong dishes ranged from 6″ – 10″.  The 8″ Pickle is the medium-sized dish.  All of these items make a wonderful trio, and have proven to be great appetizer and buffet servers.  They can even be used for other purposes as well.

This dish should not be confused with another pickle item in the American pattern – the Pickle Jar and Cover. The Pickle Jar was also introduced in 1915; however, it looks entirely different from the regular “Pickle” dish.  One is a covered jar; the Pickle is simply an open pickle server.

Sauce Boat

Item Number:  636
Approximate Size:  6¾” L – 5″ W
Production Dates:  1938-1958

The Fostoria American Sauce Boat is a lovely piece.  When it is seen without the Sauce Boat Plate, it can sometimes cause confusion for collectors.  They aren’t quite sure what it is, nor the intended purpose of the dish.  The American pattern did not produce an item called a Gravy Boat; however, the Sauce Boat serves that same purpose – and for other sauces as well.  The Sauce Boat and the Sauce Boat Plate were offered separately (and as a set) by the Fostoria Glass Company, so it is possible to have one without the other. When used together; however, they serve any type of dinner sauce with style and grace.

Fostoria American Sauce Boat and PlateThe design in the center of the boat and plate are the same, showcasing 24 petals and/or rays.  The reason they fit so perfectly, and are almost identical in appearance, is because both the Sauce Boat and Sauce Plate were made from the very same mould.

The Sauce Boat items are not as common as the American plates and glasses.  Even so, they managed to be produced for twenty years … and you can still find them.

The American relish dishes are some of the most beautiful and useful serving pieces in the entire 2056 line.  Fostoria Glass produced several different types of them, and a consumer could choose from 2-part, 3-part and even 4-part relish servers.

When it comes to the 3-part relish dishes, two different types were offered.  This post is about the 3-Part “Combination” Relish, and the easiest way to distinguish it from the 3-Part Relish is to look at its design.  The combination dish will have a long glass divider that is situated in the center of the dish, with two smaller compartments making up the other half of the server.  The regular 3-Part Relish is a smaller dish, designed with three evenly-spaced dividers.
