Approximate Size: 5¾” H
Production Dates: 1925-1943 (Crystal)
The American pattern offered two sizes of colognes – a Small Cologne, and a Large Cologne. The small size was produced for less than twenty years. All of the Small Colognes included a drop stopper; the stopper is just shy of 1″ square. They can be found with both ground (the oldest) and unground necks and stoppers.
Primarily made in clear crystal, Fostoria Glass also produced the small Colognes in Amber, Blue, and Canary – circa 1925. Unlike the crystal Colognes, the ones of color were only made from 1925-1926. Colored Boudoir Sets were offered during this short period of time, and a small Cologne was one of the items included in the set.
The crystal Colognes were very popular in filigree dresser sets. Other companies would buy the Colognes from Fostoria Glass and assemble them in dresser sets of decorative metal filigree. Some of the filigree designs were plain, while others were adorned with painted medallions.

Production Dates: 1916-1958
The Fostoria Glass Company produced two Ice Tub Plates in the American line. The one that we will be addressing in this post is the larger of the two, which was first produced in 1916. The Small Ice Tub Plate debuted first, and is about one-inch smaller in diameter. Often, you will see the Ice Tubs sold without the Plate, and this could be for a variety of reasons. Over the years, people might have thought the Ice Tub Plate was just another ordinary plate and separated it from the Ice Tub – or the Ice Tub was originally bought separately (without the Plate).
The Large Ice Tub Plate and Dinner Plate came from the same mold, so it is easy to understand the confusion in identifying them. Since the Ice Tub Plate may have edges that flow slightly upward, this trait will usually reduce its overall diameter by about ½” from the regular Dinner Plate. The higher the edges, the smaller in diameter the plate will be.

Please note that your search might offer very little results, as over the years, many Ice Tub Plates have been separated from their Ice Tubs. However, keep searching … because every now and again, you will see the correct duo listed.

Approximate Size: 9¼” H – 44 oz.
Production Dates: 1915-1925
I think most would agree that the Water Bottle is an amazing piece of glass craftsmanship. It debuted with the introduction of the American pattern in 1915. The bottles were only produced for ten years; however, they made an impression that has lasted over a century. They feature a long smooth neck, void of any cube design, making it extremely easy and comfortable to hold.

The Water Bottles are not a common item, so it is possible that none with pop up in your search results. Keep looking; however, as they do show up on eBay every now and again. Good luck!

Item Number: 369
Approximate Size: 11½″ D – 4″ H
Production Dates: 1938-1970
Fostoria Glass Company produced an item in their American line that was called the “Cheese and Cracker”. It consisted of two individual pieces – the Footed Cheese, and the Cracker Plate. When these pieces were produced, you could either buy the two-piece set together – or you could buy the Footed Cheese and/or the Cracker Plate independently of each other. For this reason, you often see the pieces separated or misidentified.
The Cracker Plate is approximately 11½” in diameter. I often see the Cheese and Cracker set sold with the wrong plate – the 11½” Sandwich Plate. The difference between the two plates is that the Cracker Plate has a raised retainer ring in the center; the Sandwich Plate does not. The retainer ring, which is about a 3½” circle, helps to hold the Footed Cheese in place.

This lovely, and very old piece, has an interesting history. To begin with, the Syrup with the Metal Handle is a pioneering piece in the American 2056 line. When it was first featured in the 1915 catalog supplement, it was described as the following: “Syrup N. P. Screw Top”. The “N. P.” refers to the item as being nickel-plated. While the handle was not mentioned, the illustration in the catalog featured a fancy metal handle. Two different handles have been seen with this piece, and the featured photo in this post shows the more plain handle.
The official name for this piece is somewhat confusing, as it appears that Fostoria Glass listed it in their catalog as being a Syrup. However, in a separate price list for the same year, they listed it as a Molasses Can with a Metal Handle. The confusion is that there already was a bigger Molasses Can pictured in the catalog, right next to the Syrup. A few years later it appears that Fostoria Glass noted this discrepancy, and thereafter it was listed in the price lists as a “Syrup”. It remained so until it was no longer produced.
