The Fostoria American Sauce Boat is a lovely piece. When it is seen without the Sauce Boat Plate, it can sometimes cause confusion for collectors. They aren’t quite sure what it is, nor the intended purpose of the dish. The American pattern did not produce an item called a Gravy Boat; however, the Sauce Boat serves that same purpose – and for other sauces as well. The Sauce Boat and the Sauce Boat Plate were offered separately (and as a set) by the Fostoria Glass Company, so it is possible to have one without the other. When used together; however, they serve any type of dinner sauce with style and grace.
The design in the center of the boat and plate are the same, showcasing 24 petals and/or rays. The reason they fit so perfectly, and are almost identical in appearance, is because both the Sauce Boat and Sauce Plate were made from the very same mould.
The Sauce Boat items are not as common as the American plates and glasses. Even so, they managed to be produced for twenty years … and you can still find them.

The Reed Handle Baskets were produced for less than twenty years, and are very easy to identify. While the reed handles make them easy to distinguish, they also can be problematic. Many of the original reed handles are missing on the glass baskets found today. Since the handles were made out of natural material, they are prone to breakage and splitting. Therefore, it is very important to keep your original handle clean and preserved.
I am sure many people will have different and preferred methods of how they clean the handles; however, I will share with you what I do. If they are dirty, I use Murphy Oil Soap to clean them. To get into the small crevices, I use a soft toothbrush. Once the handle is completely dry from cleaning, I then apply Lemon Oil for preservation. Lemon Oil will clean wood too; however, this final treatment helps keep the handle from drying out and cracking. It penetrates the wood, replenishing the oil it has lost over time. This process has worked very well for me, and hopefully will for you, too. It also has a refreshing scent, and helps to prevent mold from developing in the handle. This is important, as you don’t want to apply a wax or preservative over a handle that is still damp from cleaning.

Item Number: CC-05
Approximate Size: 3½” L – 1¾” W – 1½” H
Production Dates: 1918-1924 (when sold as a “Match Box”)
This little box went by two names – the Match Box and the Hair Pin Box & Cover. This item was first introduced in 1915 as the Hair Pin Box, and stayed in production under that same name until approximately 1925. It is important to note that this box was only referred to as a “Match Box” when it was used in the crystal 5-Piece Boudoir Set from 1918-1924. During those same years, this item was available for purchase as a solo Hair Pin Box, or one could purchase the Boudoir Set (which contained the exact same box, labeled as a Match Box).

When used in the colored Boudoir Sets, this item was known as the Large Cigarette and Cover. However, when this same box was produced in clear crystal, it was known as the Glove Box and Cover. During its very limited life as a Large Cigarette and Cover, it was produced in the colors of Amber, Blue, and Canary. This item was one of several pieces included in the colored Boudoir Sets of 1925-1926.

The American 2056 pattern offered different types of mayonnaise dishes. Consumers had a choice of buying most of the mayonnaise components by themselves – such as just this dish, or the Mayonnaise Plate. A more complete mayonnaise set (Item 477) can be found – which includes the Mayonnaise, Plate & Ladle.
It is also worth noting that I have seen slight size and shape variations on this item. The main difference has been seen in the flaring of the top edges. Since they were finished by hand, the final shape was determined by the craftsman. When more flaring is applied, the item will have a bigger diameter and probably be slightly smaller.

The Dripcut Syrup was a very popular item in the American line, and still is. Fostoria Glass made the base for the syrup; however, the top was made by the Dripcut Company of Los Angeles, California. The top dispenser is specifically designed to pour syrup quickly and as neatly as possible. With just one hand, one can release the top lever and pour syrup. The Dripcut Syrup – with its quick release lever – helps prevent a sticky mess from getting on your fingers and the table.
Other more fancy Syrups can be found in the American line; however, if you are seeking one that you can use on a more frequent basis, the Dripcut Syrup is a great choice. The name “Dripcut” was actually engraved on the slide plate mechanism on the older, original tops. If you are an avid breakfast lover that loves to serve pancakes and waffles, this beautiful Dripcut Syrup is a must-have.
The original tops were made out of metal, with a chrome plating. You can still find similar tops today and many will fit the original Fostoria glass syrup bottoms. Pay attention to the lid size and/or holding capacity noted by the manufacturer, as lids for a 6½ to 7 ounce container will usually work. Many of the newer tops are made out of plastic; however, there are some that are made out of steel, covered in a chrome finish.
