The 3-Toed Tid Bit often gets confused with the 3-Toed Bon Bon. While similar in size, the Bon Bon is actually about an inch smaller in diameter. The Tid Bit has serrated edges that go straight-up, versus the Bon Bon that has edges that flow outward. Look for those specific traits and you should be able to correctly identify them.

In addition to crystal, the Fostoria American Toothpick can be found in a beautiful Ruby color. The Ruby items were commissioned by the Fostoria Glass Society of America in 1983, to be made as a souvenir. They are stamped on the bottom with the “FGSA” logo.

This particular syrup server is different from the others in the American line, mainly because it has a Bakelite handle. The Sani-Cut Server was offered for just a few years. The country was at war when this item was discontinued. It is highly probable that this was a contributing factor for the short life of the Sani-Cut Server, especially since Bakelite products were used for wartime equipment during World War II.
The Fostoria catalogs only showed one shape for the handle of the Sani-Cut Server. It is the softly-rounded shape that is shown in the photo above. While the catalog did not specify the color of the handle, it is unofficially referred to as “Butterscotch”. One can find replacement tops for the Sani-Cut Server that display different colors and shapes of the handle; however, the original version from Fostoria Glass will have the smooth, rounded handle.

The Oval Picture Frame was produced late in Fostoria’s life. There is a myth that there were two oval picture frames produced in the American 2056 pattern – one with a cube-like design, and one without. That thinking is simply not correct. There is only one American Oval Picture Frame, and that is the piece featured in this post. Another oval frame (Bridal Picture Frame, #FR01) was produced in Fostoria’s giftware line; however, there were no cubes in its design and it was never attributed to the American 2056 pattern.

The Olive dish is another pioneering piece in the American 2056 pattern. It had one of the longest production runs in the entire line, making its debut in 1915. There were two other similar shaped pieces produced at the same time – the Pickle and the Celery dish. Of all three, the Olive dish is the smallest. These three pieces are wonderful appetizer and buffet servers, and can even be used for other purposes as well.

Fostoria Glass made two Oil & Stoppers in the American pattern. The piece featured in this post is the largest size made. It holds approximately 1-2 more ounces than the smaller version. The height measurement is referring to the total height of the piece, with the D Stopper in place.
Fostoria sometimes used abbreviations in their product descriptions; thus, the “D” Stopper simply refers to a “Drop Stopper”. These type of stoppers allow for a repeated, consistent, and accurate dispensing of oil – one drop at a time, or in a stream. The stoppers were available with clear glass, or with a “frosted” look. The frosted stoppers are officially described as “Ground Stoppers”. A buyer had a choice between the two, and the ground variety was more expensive.
One of the sets that the American pattern offered was a 6-Piece Condiment Set. The set included two 5 oz. Oils, two Shakers (FGT), one Mustard/Cover & Spoon, and one 9″ Condiment Tray. The 6-Piece Condiment Set; however, was never sold with the larger 7 oz. oil cruets. Some books state that these larger pieces won’t fit on the Condiment Tray. I believe that “most” of them won’t fit, but I do know that some will. The piece featured in this post does fit the indented wells on the Condiment Tray, and I use it as such. In summary, the larger Oils were not sold in the official 6-Pc Condiment Set, but it is possible to find some that will fit the 9″ Condiment Tray.
