Item Number: 26-461
Approximate Size: 4⅜” H
Production Dates: 1939-1943; 1953-1970
The production dates I have given are for when this item was used in the American 2056 pattern. It does not include the dates it was used with other Fostoria glass patterns.
The complete American Candle Lamp consisted of four individual glass pieces, or three … depending on when it was produced. The Candle Lamp Chimneys (along with the Candle Lamp Bases) were always official parts of both versions. While this item was used and featured in the American 2056 line, its history goes way back to the early 1900’s when it was also used with other Fostoria candle lamps.

The Small Boat is one of the longest-running production items in the entire American line. Two different-sized boats were produced, this smaller one – and a bigger 12″ size. The overall length measurement of this piece is 8½”, including the handles. Boats, as opposed to the American “relish” dishes, are open in design. They have no dividers or compartments within the dish.
While the Small Boat was primarily made in clear crystal, there was a very brief period of time from 1925-1926 when this piece was produced in a beautiful shade of green. This was an option for both the small and large-sized boats. The green-colored boats are not common items, as they were only made for about one year. Every now and again you might find a boat in another color; however, those would be very hard to find – a whimsey or an item produced in an experimental or trial color.

The Bell was designed by Jon Saffell – a talented model maker and design artist. I would be amiss if I did not mention how fragile this item is. Unlike other pressed glassware from the American 2056 line, the Bell is hand blown. Delicate it is, and great care should be afforded to it.

n 1915, when this item was introduced, Fostoria Glass described this piece as a “Spoon”. Some collectors prefer to call it a Spooner; however, I shall remain true to Fostoria’s original description and spelling of this item. These type of open containers were used to hold spoons on the table, and they did not have a cover. There is; however, a Sugar & Cover (aka Candy & Cover) in the American pattern that has a strikingly similar bottom.
There are differences in a true Spoon and the Sugar & Covers. I seem to have a different approach than most in determining what item is which. The Spoons have a top diameter measurement of approximately 3¼”, versus the larger 4″ opening on the bottom piece of the Sugar & Cover. The S&C covers won’t fit on an original Spoon. Another factor is the number of petals or rays in the bottom of the piece. The original Spoons have a total of 22 rays, whereas many of the Sugar & Cover bottoms have 24 rays.

Production Dates: 1924-1982
The Fostoria American Handled Sugar was offered two ways – with a cover, or without. The uncovered version is about 3¼” tall. Both versions were cataloged as separate items, and sold as such. The covered version is item 673; the uncovered version (shown in this post) is item 674.
This is an item that disproves the age-old myth that we so often hear, “All Fostoria American pieces have three seam lines.” The Sugar and Cover comes from a four-part mould. The sugar bowl has a smooth top rim, void of any serrated edges.
