3-Toed Tricorne

Item Number:  M-01
Approximate Size:  6½” W – 3¼” H
Production Dates:  1940-1944

The small and petite 3-Toed Tricorne is an item we don’t really hear (or see) a lot about.  Why is that?  It seems to always be overshadowed by its bigger sibling, the 3-Cornered Centerpiece.  Thus, I think it is important to focus the spotlight on the 3-Toed Tricorne.  It is way overdue.

I think the first thing I should mention is its official name and description.  Rarely do people call it by its proper name.  Even some book authors don’t call it by its proper name, which has only led to more confusion.  It was never described as a centerpiece by Fostoria Glass, for it is too small in size.  Fostoria described this piece as a “tricorne”, which honestly, is a most perfect description.  It means “having three horns or hornlike projections; three-cornered”.  So let’s be clear; this item is not a centerpiece – it’s a tricorne.

The 3-Toed Tricorne is an intriguing item, because frankly – most people don’t know what to use it for.  In the beginning, when it was first introduced, Fostoria Glass categorized it as a miscellaneous item.  As time went by, it was then included in their Nappy category – as this resource website has done.  It would seem that even Fostoria was conflicted as to how to categorize this item, and I think that is the case for many collectors today.  Truthfully, you can use it for whatever you wish!

Another topic worth mentioning is the true production dates for the 3-Toed Tricorne.  Unfortunately, it seems that most published production dates for this item are severely flawed.  The error is not reflective of a few years; rather, the data is incorrect by decades!  Look at the production dates posted above, for this piece really did not have a long life.  For that reason alone, the 3-Toed Tricorne might be worthy of another look.

Handled Serving Dish

Item Number:  648
Size:  9″ L – 2⅜” H
Production Dates:  1948-1982

This is another wonderful serving dish in the American 2056 line.  Most people think of this piece as a bowl; however, Fostoria Glass described it as a dish.  It’s slighter smaller in height than most American serving bowls and features two beautiful handles.  There is a handle on each side of the dish, making it extremely easy to pass along the food table.

Shrimp & Dip

Item Number:  259
Approximate Size:  12¼” D – 4¼” H
Production Dates:  1959-1973

In all my years of collecting Fostoria American, I have never heard anyone state that they did not like the Shrimp & Dip.  It is simply a spectacular piece of glass, classy enough to compete with any other centerpiece you might have (floral or not).  Once you place it on your table or buffet, it will make a delicious statement.  Obviously, shrimp and dip is the food of original intention; however, it can hold and serve a multitude of other food items as well.  The dip goes in the bowl on top, and the shrimp gets draped below.  The Shrimp & Dip is a little over 12″ in diameter, and will feed the biggest of crowds.

Always try and handle this piece by the bottom, with two hands.  This is not considered a common item, and is usually more expensive to buy than most American pieces.  Part of that is due to the beauty and uniqueness of the item itself, as well as the fact that it had a shorter production life than most other 2056 items.  It was produced in clear crystal, and I am aware of no Look-Alikes.  It is unique to the American 2056 pattern.

3-Part Combination Relish

Item Number:  622
Approximate Size:  11″ L – 7½” W
Production Dates:  1938-1982

The American relish dishes are some of the most beautiful and useful serving pieces in the entire 2056 line.  Fostoria Glass produced several different types of them, and a consumer could choose from 2-part, 3-part and even 4-part relish servers.

When it comes to the 3-part relish dishes, two different types were offered.  This post is about the 3-Part “Combination” Relish, and the easiest way to distinguish it from the 3-Part Relish is to look at its design.  The combination dish will have a long glass divider that is situated in the center of the dish, with two smaller compartments making up the other half of the server.  The regular 3-Part Relish is a smaller dish, designed with three evenly-spaced dividers.

Oval

Item Number:  538
Approximate Size:  4½” L – 3¼” W
Production Dates:  1918-1944; reinstated 1946-1958

The Oval dish is just that – oval in appearance, and petite in size.  Since it is a small dish, it was often used for serving almonds and other nuts.  There is a smaller “Oval Almond” piece that is about 3¾” in length.  Often confused with each other, the Oval and Oval Almond are actually two different pieces.  The Oval never had a continuous production run, being discontinued after 1944 – and then being reinstated a couple years later.
