Handled Serving Dish

Item Number:  648
Size:  9″ L – 2⅜” H
Production Dates:  1948-1982

This is another wonderful serving dish in the American 2056 line.  Most people think of this piece as a bowl; however, Fostoria Glass described it as a dish.  It’s slighter smaller in height than most American serving bowls and features two beautiful handles.  There is a handle on each side of the dish, making it extremely easy to pass along the food table.

Shrimp & Dip

Item Number:  259
Approximate Size:  12¼” D – 4¼” H
Production Dates:  1959-1973

In all my years of collecting Fostoria American, I have never heard anyone state that they did not like the Shrimp & Dip.  It is simply a spectacular piece of glass, classy enough to compete with any other centerpiece you might have (floral or not).  Once you place it on your table or buffet, it will make a delicious statement.  Obviously, shrimp and dip is the food of original intention; however, it can hold and serve a multitude of other food items as well.  The dip goes in the bowl on top, and the shrimp gets draped below.  The Shrimp & Dip is a little over 12″ in diameter, and will feed the biggest of crowds.

Always try and handle this piece by the bottom, with two hands.  This is not considered a common item, and is usually more expensive to buy than most American pieces.  Part of that is due to the beauty and uniqueness of the item itself, as well as the fact that it had a shorter production life than most other 2056 items.  It was produced in clear crystal, and I am aware of no Look-Alikes.  It is unique to the American 2056 pattern.

3-Part Combination Relish

Item Number:  622
Approximate Size:  11″ L – 7½” W
Production Dates:  1938-1982

The American relish dishes are some of the most beautiful and useful serving pieces in the entire 2056 line.  Fostoria Glass produced several different types of them, and a consumer could choose from 2-part, 3-part and even 4-part relish servers.

When it comes to the 3-part relish dishes, two different types were offered.  This post is about the 3-Part “Combination” Relish, and the easiest way to distinguish it from the 3-Part Relish is to look at its design.  The combination dish will have a long glass divider that is situated in the center of the dish, with two smaller compartments making up the other half of the server.  The regular 3-Part Relish is a smaller dish, designed with three evenly-spaced dividers.

Oval

Item Number:  538
Approximate Size:  4½” L – 3¼” W
Production Dates:  1918-1944; reinstated 1946-1958

The Oval dish is just that – oval in appearance, and petite in size.  Since it is a small dish, it was often used for serving almonds and other nuts.  There is a smaller “Oval Almond” piece that is about 3¾” in length.  Often confused with each other, the Oval and Oval Almond are actually two different pieces.  The Oval never had a continuous production run, being discontinued after 1944 – and then being reinstated a couple years later.

Cordial Bottle & Stopper

Item Number:  BOT-3
Approximate Size:  7¼” H – 9 oz.
Production Dates:  1934-1943

The Cordial Bottle is the next size down from the Decanter & Stopper.  Both of these liquor items were introduced at the same time; however, the Cordial Bottle & Stopper had a much shorter production life.  A “cordial” is often described as a sweet tonic.  They are usually flavored with a variety of fruits, nuts, spices, etc. – and when added to the main liquor, make the drink more flavorful.  It makes sense that this bottle would be smaller in size when compared to the larger Decanter, as Cordials usually act as additives – enhancing the main spirit or whiskey.  If you live in the UK; however, a cordial can refer to a sweet, non-alcoholic liquid.

The Cordial Bottle is very similar to the Large Cologne.  The outside dimensions are approximately the same; however, the Cordial has a larger volume capacity.  (Cordial = 9 oz.  Large Cologne = 8 oz.)  Even though these are the recorded holding capacities from Fostoria Glass, it is always wise to expect some slight fluctuations in this regard.  Some books state that the Cordial Bottle was introduced in 1915; however, that information is flawed.  It was the Large Cologne that debuted in 1915, not the Cordial.  Since the two bottles are almost identical in design, this is probably a contributing factor to the confusion between the two items.

Syrup, Cover, & Plate

Item Number:  SV-04
Approximate Size:  5¼″ H (Syrup & Cover) – 8 oz.
Production Dates:  1938-1944

The Syrup & Cover was introduced in 1938, towards the end of the art-deco period.  At the very same time, other companies offered similar designed syrup servers.  The 3-piece syrup combo, which included a 6″ Syrup Plate, did not have a long life.  The set was produced for only six years.

The Syrup, Cover & Plate is a beautiful combination!  Please be sure to read the post on the Syrup Plate, as these are often misidentified.  They were made from the mould of the 6″ Bread and Butter Plate; therefore, they look remarkably similar.  The main difference between the two pieces is that the Syrup Plate will “usually” have taller side edges and a slightly deeper indentation in the center of the plate (to accommodate the Syrup).

The catalog data states that the Syrup is about 3¾″ high; however, that measurement is only accurate when measuring the Syrup without the Cover.  Since the Syrup & Cover was never sold without the top, the measurement I have stated above (5¼″) is referencing the height of the Syrup with the Cover on.  The holding capacity of 10 ounces was also inaccurate in the catalog data.  A more accurate holding capacity would be approximately 8 ounces, which I have disclosed above.
